Islamic Q&A

In the modern world, it can sometimes be difficult to establish what is and isn’t permitted during Ramadan. Can I hold my husband’s hand in public? Can I celebrate my birthday? If you’re confused on any of the dos and don’ts of Ramadan, send your question through to us and it will be answered by one of the UAE’s top Islamic Sheikhs.

    sharifa asks:

asalaamualaikum i wanted to know what age should a kid start fasting while ramadan?

If the child didn’t reach puberty, then fasting is not an obligation for him. But still parents have to encourage their kids to fast if they can, to train them for the future. Same things apply to praying and fasting, The Prophet (PBUH) instructs Muslims to: "Order your children to pray at the age of seven. And beat them [lightly] if they do not do so by the age of ten, and separate them in their bedding," which means separating boys and girls. Another Hadeeth of the Prophet says that no responsibility lies upon a sleeping person until he wakes up, a boy until he reaches adolescence and a senile person until he regains his sanity. And god knows best.

S.A I would like to know if fasting is a must for my grandfather who is old and sick with alot of sickness.. He has cancer and sugar and what should I do instead of him fasting?! Do I have to do anything?! please I need an urgent answer thank u

If your Grandfather can’t fast because of his diseases, then all he has to do is pay Fidya, which is to feed a poor person for each day he missed the fast. He can pay the price of fediya day by day or pay for 30 days at once, in the beginning, the middle or at the end of the month. And God knows best.

Is it compulsory to recite the Quran in the arabic language? For those who are not familiar with the language, is it acceptable to recite in english.Pls advise

The Quran was revealed in Arabic; therefore you can read it only in Arabic, when you read it in English it means you are reading the translation of the Quran not the Quran. And God knows best.

we are new to Dubai and I am looking for Islamic classes or a madrassa where my 8 year old son can learn how to read the Quraan. He knows letters but does not know how to join them and recite fluently. Shukran

Dear Sister, There are many schools that teach the Holy Quran in Dubai. All you have to do is to call The Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities on (046087796) and ask for Centres for Memorizing the Holy Quran, take the name of the nearest centre to where you stay.

    Basheer asks:

I missed my magrib prayer, but after completing my Isha prayer with jamat, one more jamat started praying Isha. Can I join this Jamat with the niyyat of magrib??

Yes you can pray Magreb with a group performing Isha prayer, but then, when the Imam reaches the third unit of the prayer (raka) you need to stop, exactly after the third prostration and wait until he finishes the fourth one so you can end the prayer together.

    Mahmoud asks:

What am I meant to say when I intend praying Tarawih, Shafea and Witr?

You don’t have to say anything because intentions come from your heart not your tongue. The intention itself is enough to pray Tarawih, Shafea and Witr.
